To become fluent in not only speaking, but also reading of Chinese Mandarin within 24 months. I'm extremely sceptical of this goal. I tend to start things and never finish them and this seems like a task of mammoth proportions. |

One of my minor goals is to learn 3000 of the most common characters used in daily correspondence. I'll be learning traditional Chinese characters due to the fact that I'll be in Taiwan. |

I'd like to say absolute beginner, but I have an advantage. I've been living in Japan for about three years and I've picked up some Kanji along the way. Not all of it is exactly the same and some of the meanings are different. I'd say that I can recognise about 500 Japanese kanji. |
